The Girly Cake

This was my daughters creation, she designed it. She was very specific about what she wanted and stood by my side the whole time telling me what to do. She wanted a turquoise cake with the purse on top and candy jewelry all over it. I think it is a good compromise between the two cakes we were looking at in THIS post.
She was thrilled with the final results.

I was running out of time and didn't know how I was going to get the handle on the purse to stand up. I had floral wire on hand, but it wasn't working with the fondant. That's when I thought of restringing the candy beads onto the wire. I think it worked nicely. I also used the floral wire to attach all the candy necklaces to the cake.
I know it looks a little busy, but it didn't seam quite so crazy in real life.
Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions. In the end I let her make all the calls.

*Also I have to tell you I tried THIS fondant recipe instead of my usual. I have to admit, I am in LOVE. If you are thinking of trying fondant you should give it a go. It was so easy and worked like a dream. Thank you Laura for sharing Peggy's recipe with me.

  7. It's amazing, Kalleen! But really, really, is anyone surprised? Your kids are lucky, indeed. Sometimes my kids don't get their bday cakes until a month later. I'm not proud of that fact, but it is a fact. Other times I get Aunt Jenny to decorate one for me. :)

  29. You nailed this one sista!!! My sister and I made a castle cake one year for my oldest daughter and we joked that "it didn't turn out quite like it was in our heads". Of course it didn't help that we were in the hardware store shopping for PVC 1 hour before her party.

You are a great Mom to make her dreams come true! My Mom made my wedding dress (that I helped her design). It is so nice to have a Mom that will make your dreams come to life! She's a lucky girl!

  37. I, too, have rcntly fell in love w/ cake making. So, I've gotten every book on the planet (U must have Confetti Cakes in ur personal library) and have several friends that do this for a living. Not to mention the inspiration on TV w/ all of the cake shows now. But, I pretty much do what you did, researching online. In fact, my favorite fondant rec is the same one you use! I've tried several recipes and the storebought stuff~ TERRIBLE! The MM is my FAVORITE! A little tip (if you want, no biggie), In lou of the 2-5T of water, I use 1T water, 1T vanilla extract, 1/2T butter extract, 1/2T almond extract, and 1/2t salt. It literally tastes like hardened buttercream icing. Those are the same flavors I put in my icing... If you make another cake, I implore you to try it! The rec is soo sweet, that salt really helps identify the flavors.
