I know school has started and I'm a little behind. But, I've still got a few more things I wanted to make.
Instead of using our donate pile for this refashion, I used three 4x womens tank tops to get two darling knit dresses.
I picked up the tank tops at the DownEast Clearance Center. I fell in love with the bright yellow and knew I wanted to make some dresses.
I used another dress to make my patterns but you can get the same look by following Dana's instructions HERE.
I also made my first pair of leggings. It was so simple. I'll be making lots more. I used Dana's Short's Tutorial, but traced a pair of leggings instead.
I used the ribbing on the neckline for the tops of my pockets.
Because it was knit, once the pockets were cut I could sew them down, leaving the edges unfinished.
My daughter was happy to have mismatched leggings. She said she liked being the same but also a little different.
Now, I need your help! Both of these cute girls are having there tonsils taken out tomorrow. It's a ten day recovery, so I don't know if I'll be blogging much. I'm hoping some of you will have some advice on how to make recovery easier. Do you know any good recipes for food they can eat? What do you do with a child who is recovering for that long, other than endless movies? I would love any advice you have. Thanks!
Oh my sweet friend, I wish I had words of wisdom, but words fail me. I will be praying for you and your sweet girls.

Yaaaay for your cute new creations!
ReplyDeleteUGH for having tonsils taken out! I don't know the first thing about it!
Good luck though! I will pray for a quick and "easy" recovery!!!
Adorable!!! These would even be cute with long sleeves! My daughter has the striped leggings and I love them...espcially with the yellow dress....now to find a 4x shirt :)
ReplyDeletehi Kalleen,
ReplyDeleteI just had my tonsils out this past June. it hurt like heck, but I am also 28. they say it is MUCH easier on kids. Make sure you have lot of popsicles around. The ones that were my favorites were those Flav-or-ice ones (ya know the ones that are like the tubes of juice and you just freeze them - that's what the hospital gave too). I also made LOTs of milkshakes. I used some instant pudding mix to help make them thick. frozen peaches, vanilla frozen yogurt, milk, little vanilla pudding, ice, whatever floats your boat. OR try milk, mint choc chip ice cream, little choc pudding mix, and a little ice (maybe even some choc syrup!). i will also say there were times it hurt so much the ice cream was too cold. i had lots of mashed potatoes, ramen noodles, and banana pudding. :) hope that helps.
i wish i could sew like you:)

oh oh, and get some lollipops, those are good to suck on cause they keep your throat moist but aren't super cold. my mom bought me a bag of dum-dums and my aunt bought me a bag of tootsie roll pops about a week in (cause those take a little more work obviously). gum was good too - as long as they aren't going to swallow it, so maybe even blow-pops. i don't remember their exact ages. sorry.
ReplyDeleteI had my tonsils out last year at almost 32 years old. I hear it's much easier on kids than adults, but I didn't think it was that bad (I also did 42 hours of labor with no drugs, so I may have a high pain tolerance). I laid in bed for almost five days before I could stay down no longer--it was driving me crazy! Cold stuff felt awful to me, so I ate lots of chicken broth and mashed potatoes. Have lots of good books on hand to read to your girls, and, you said it, lots of movies. They will probably sleep for most of the first day or so. I will say a prayer for you and your girls. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about getting tonsils out, but I say plan on lots of craftiness! Paint rocks, make play-doh once they are feeling up to it, maybe make and decorate cupcakes later on, too. I just saw a post on "whatever" with rainbow-colored ice cubes that would be fun for them ... even in plain water.
ReplyDeleteWould they love fabric scrap paper dolls?

My kids LOVE Crayola Color Wonder products. A bit pricey, but may be worth it if the girls are in bed. They're fun and will not make a mess of your bedding or their jammies.
And my daughter LOVES contact paper "stained glass" projects. They take a little preparation, but are pretty and fun. http://craftydrmom.wordpress.com/2010/05/11/contact-paper-stained-glass-a-guest-post/
Okay... I got a little excited. Sorry... Good luck!
Having my tonsils out at age 6 was something I'll never forget. I know that popscicles were awesome...even at 2am. Have a pad of paper handy so they can write you notes. It hurts to talk for a few days. Stay on top of your dosing for tylenol/advil. It works better when you have a constant level in the blood stream. As far as distractions, books on tape are wonderful. My children love to listen to a story and follow along.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and your girls good luck!
ReplyDeleteI made my girls some small flannel covered boards and a ton of colorful shapes to create endless pictures with. Lots of crafts, like very simple embroidery are great ways to spend time. I hope all goes well.
My son got his out when he was 3. He didnt really want to eat much of anything for the first couple of days. Just have some jello, popsicles, 7up and such on hand for when she does want to eat. Don't be surprised if she isn't hungry at first.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine recommended new spray bottles for each child, and filling them with juice. When the pain hits, the spray is gentler than throat spray, but just as relieving. Hope it helps!
ReplyDeletethat is absolutely adorable! love that idea!! And good luck with the tonsils, I haven't ever had mine out but I have always heard lots of ice cream and rest :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kalleen,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is so cute, and I love the Food Face Plates. I took a hand at it and posted the outcome on my blog. I linked the tutorial back up to you.
Thanks,
Melissa
I just got my daughter one of those pot holder loom kits that we had when we were kids. She doesn't have the dexterity for the weaving part but she picks out all the colors and stretches the loops across then I go back and weave it.
ReplyDeleteI hope my idea works well enough to thank you for your awesome blog! :)
When I had my wisdom teeth taken out smoothies were the only thing I could eat for a couple of weeks. I bought Slim Fast for fruit juice and mixed it into my breakfast, lunch, and dinner smoothies for a little protein for meals since I couldn't eat real food for a long time. Then I worked up to hummus.
ReplyDeleteI have an old tank top from downeast that I've been saving to refashion. I am going to try and make one of these for my daughter. Thanks for the great ideas!
