Giant Cupcake Cake

I said I would share my baby's cake if it turned out. I'm happy with the results. In fact I'm kinda in love with it.

I love cupcakes. I've been wanting to make my baby a giant cupcake for her birthday for a while. Wilton makes a cool pan, I wanted one but couldn't get over the $30 price tag. So I came up with this method instead.

I used two pans. One is 5" and the other is 6" I already had the 5" and the 6" was $6 at Walmart. I didn't mind spending the money since I know I will actually use this pan again.
I made two of the 5" cakes and one 6"cake. (I used one cake mix for all three).
Once they were stacked I measured the hight of the bottom half for my "liner."
I made a batch of my super easy marshmallow fondant found HERE. I rolled it out and cut strips with the paper I used to measure the bottom.
Then I made uneven indentations in each of the strips to create the folds of the "liner."
Next I trimmed the top of the cake till it was the shape I wanted.
I frosted the bottom between layers and all around the outside. Then I attached the strips of fondant. I placed the ends tightly together so that it looked like one continuous piece.
Then I frosted the top. I started by frosting a thin layer over the entire top. Then I used a zip-lock baggie to add big dollopy circles around the bottom of the top of the cupcake. After that, I spread a thicker coat over the rest of the top and blended in the very tops of the dollops.
I added a candle and some sprinkles and was done.
It's tradition in our family to let the birthday child eat their own cake. It can be quite the show. Unfortunately this little girl wasn't that interested.
We tried to help her but this is as messy as she got.
I also made this little t-shirt up at the last minute.
HERE is a list of parties I link to.

Adorable! I was just looking at that Wilton pan over the weekend for my daughter's 11th birthday. She loves cupcakes...but I didn't want to spend my money. Thanks for this solution!

This is super cute!! I did a tie-dye cake for my little girls 1st birthday, and while it was cute on the inside, it was just plain white on the outside. This may a good idea for her second birthday though, which is fast approaching.

Why didn't I know you would figure out a way to make a cupcake cake. I have been eyeballing those cake pans too, but will not pay the money for one. Now, thanks to you I don't have to. Audrey ( my oldest ) loves this and is begging to try it. I hope we can make it work.

P.S. I would share my shoes with you any day.

Oh my gosh. I'm in love with your blog. I think I could spend a lot of time here and even more time trying some projects from your inspiration. But seriously, the dino land suitcase. Ridiculously cool. My son would love that! Your cake is crazy good too. I love how you made the fondant look like a cupcake wrapper. I'm bookmarking your blog and you have a new stalker. He he he.

What a cute cake! Great job! My little girl didn't get very messy with her cake on her 1st or 2nd birthday . . . in fact she wouldn't even touch it without a fork! So funny how little ones never quite do what we expect them to do :-) Happy birthday to your little girl!

I've seen that pan but didn't want to pay the big bucks for it - what a great way around creating it without the special pan. I am having my first linky party tomorrow (tuesday) and would love to have you link-up: www.craftedition.blogspot.com

love this! I actually attempted to make one for my youngests 1st birthday way back when. It was a flop because I baked it in a pyrex bowl (to make the top of the cupcake) but didn't end up baking it long enough and the center fell :( yours is so so great!
